Newport Bus in South Wales runs a fleet of over 100 vehicles, including coaches with on-board toilet facilities. Colin Thomas, Project Manager for Newport Bus, explains: “Previously we had been driving our coaches an 80-mile round trip to empty their waste at another coach depot, as it was the closest and safest way to dispose of it.
“Because of the dead mileage, drop fees and additional driver wages, this didn’t feel like an efficient solution. When we took on a fleet of FlixBus vehicles, we decided this was the perfect opportunity to bring our coach toilet waste disposal in-house.”
The coach operator chose to install a Vogelsang RoadPump Easy at its depot for their maintenance team to easily empty the waste on-site.
“The RoadPump is a fantastic way for us to empty our own coach toilets. Its simple design makes it easy and quick for drivers to use, and saves us so much time which would otherwise be spent traveling to another depot for drainage. Also, as the whole system is above ground, we can move it should we ever need to. It’s definitely a benefit for us,” said Lee Ahern, Engineering Director for Newport Transport.
“Now it is installed, we’re saving £3,000 a month by emptying the waste on our site. The waste is immediately pumped into a 10,000-gallon storage tank which is emptied every three weeks at a cost of approximately £300. Financially, it’s been a no-brainer for us, we’ve seen a return on investment very quickly.”
