As marinas and inland waterways become more focused on their environmental impact, finding effective waste management solutions is crucial. The PierPump waste management system offers a practical way to support boaters' eco-friendly experiences while upholding the highest environmental standards.
Nestled along the rugged coastline of County Wexford, Ireland, lies Kilmore Quay—a picturesque fishing village. Its traditional thatched cottages and bustling marina offer an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil escape by the sea. As the Irish Sea meets the Atlantic, Kilmore Quay Marina serves as a gateway to adventure, where visitors can explore the stunning Saltee Islands, enjoy the local culture, or cast their lines for a day of fishing.
The 60-berth marina not only provides boaters with expected modern amenities but also upholds environmental responsibility. At the heart of its waste management system lies the PierPump, ensuring seamless waste management while preserving the pristine beauty of Kilmore Quay and its surrounding waters.
Kilmore Quay Marina is part of the Blue Flag standard, which sets environmental and safety criteria for marinas and beaches worldwide. During the busy season starting from May and peaking in July and August, the marina hosts a diverse range of European boaters, primarily from the UK, Wales, and increasingly from France.
"Boaters typically stay for an average of two to three nights, enjoying the amenities of our small village like the restaurants, shops, and pubs. So, we have a certain standard to uphold to not only make our boaters welcomed and at ease but to also be eco-friendly and provide them with self-management systems like Vogelsang's PierPump.”
Aidan Bates, Harbour Master of Kilmore Quay Marina
To maintain the Blue Flag standard and enhance wastewater pumping reliability, Wexford County Council sought a solution to replace the aging diaphragm-operated pump at Kilmore Quay marina, prone to frequent servicing and blockages from wear and debris. After a thorough tender process, the PierPump emerged as the ideal choice for Kilmore Quay, with Vogelsang partnering with Campion Pumps for supply and installation. Installing the PierPump was straightforward and once in place, the pump was ready for use, with just the touch of a button. Aidan notes, "Installation was so smooth, thanks to Campion Pumps' and Vogelsang’s reliable local support, completing the process in just one day."
At the heart of the PierPump lies the original Vogelsang rotary lobe pump, a self-priming positive displacement pump specially designed for viscous media and liquids contaminated with foreign matter. Its highly robust, elastomer-coated rotary lobes ensure efficient suction and pumping of fluids directly into the marina's sewer system. And since the pump is a closed system, there are no unpleasant odours when it is used.
Aidan and his team appreciate the PierPump's robust rotary lobes, capable of handling tough materials and debris, making it an excellent asset for any marina in need of efficient waste management solutions.
"The PierPump is perfect for Kilmore Quay; easy for boaters to use and with a rotary lobe pump that handles foreign bodies effectively," says Dan Maunsell, Vogelsang Industrial Technical Consultant
What sets it apart is its user-friendly design—no additional personnel are required to operate it. Boaters can easily use the pump independently, thanks to its universal connections that ensure compatibility with all boats and yachts.
Aidan, concludes, "All in all PierPump's reliability and user-friendly design have improved our waste management. It meets European boaters' desire for an eco-friendly experience in Kilmore Quay. Overall, I highly recommend it to other marinas looking to upgrade their pumping systems." Aidan talks more about the marina and the PierPump in the video here.
The PierPump isn't just a piece of equipment; it's a testament to innovation and sustainability. By streamlining waste management processes, it helps marinas like Kilmore Quay minimise their environmental footprint while providing boaters with an enjoyable experience. It's a win-win for both the environment and the boating community.
