Advances in slurry application technology have enabled a mixed farm to make the most of its slurry, which has reduced the need for bought-in fertiliser, and improved forage quality.
At a train maintenance depot it’s not always possible to empty the carriages of sanitation waste using the stationary CT pumps. Low temperatures in winter can cause the pumps outdoors to freeze, and at times the carriages need to be emptied without being moved. Northern Rail’s Heaton depot in Newcastle needed a way of cleaning the carriages in a way that is flexible to the situation at hand.
The splash plate ban has worried some and inspired others. Callum Fernihough has chosen to get ahead and make best use of slurry by using a trailing shoe applicator that is more precise to reduce his family’s reliance on bought in fertiliser.
The 1.3MW AD plant in Nomansland, Exeter, has been operating since 2014, and uses a feedstock of approx. 3,000 tonnes of chicken litter and 6,500 tonnes of maize, silage and farmyard muck per year.
The Corbiere Renewables plant, run by Bio Capital, is a truly circular process. Corbiere Renewables is located on the Raynham Estate, which farms some 4,200 acres of crops and supports a beef herd.
The challenges of liquid manure spreading in dry weather:
Slurry spreading poses particular challenges for farmers, especially during periods of dry weather. Drought causes the liquid components of the slurry to penetrate the soil quickly, while the solid fibrous matter remains on the surface. These fibers can affect the quality of the forage as they can be mixed with the grass during the next cut. This is a serious problem that can affect animal health.
