The more recent installation of a Vogelsang XSplit separator has seen separation become key to growing the dairy unit whilst carefully managing costs.

For many people working within the wastewater industry, the ragging of pumps and other equipment is an all too familiar sight – one which has been steadily increasing in recent years, and sadly doesn’t look to abate, as wet wipes, textiles and other foreign bodies make their way into the sewage treatment process.
Newport Bus in South Wales runs a fleet of over 100 vehicles, including coaches with on-board toilet facilities. Colin Thomas, Project Manager for Newport Bus, explains: “Previously we had been driving our coaches an 80-mile round trip to empty their waste at another coach depot, as it was the closest and safest way to dispose of it.
Loyalty Connections coach company is based in Margate and currently operates over 20 coaches and mini busses. The fleet team had been driving the coaches to Heathrow Airport to empty the toilet waste – a 200-mile round trip of dead mileage and additional driver’s wages. The company then moved premises and decided to take action to empty toilet waste on-site.
Advances in slurry application technology have enabled a mixed farm to make the most of its slurry, which has reduced the need for bought-in fertiliser, and improved forage quality.
At a train maintenance depot it’s not always possible to empty the carriages of sanitation waste using the stationary CT pumps. Low temperatures in winter can cause the pumps outdoors to freeze, and at times the carriages need to be emptied without being moved. Northern Rail’s Heaton depot in Newcastle needed a way of cleaning the carriages in a way that is flexible to the situation at hand.
The splash plate ban has worried some and inspired others. Callum Fernihough has chosen to get ahead and make best use of slurry by using a trailing shoe applicator that is more precise to reduce his family’s reliance on bought in fertiliser.
